Dallas Cowboys Sign Carl Lawson

Carl Lawson, a former defensive end for the New York Jets, signed with the Dallas Cowboys. Details of the the deal have not been released.

Cincinatti Bengals

Lawson was originally drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. His play with the Bengals was solid but he had a hard time staying healthy:

  • He had an impressive rookie season, leading all rookies with 8.5 sacks
  • In 2018, he suffered a season ending injury in week 8.
  • In 2019, he was limited to seven games but did record 5 sacks.
  • His final year in Cincinnati saw him play in every game and record 5.5 sacks.

New York Jets

In 2021, Carl Lawson signed a lucrative three-year, $45 million contract with the New York Jets. However, his time with the Jets was disappointing:

  • He missed the entire 2021 season due to a ruptured Achilles tendon during training camp.
  • In 2022, he started every game for the first time in his career and recorded 7 sacks.
  • In 2023 season, Lawson dealt with a back injury before the season, playing in only six games.

the dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys’ decision to sign Lawson comes after losing pass rusher Sam Williams to a torn ACL, MCL during early training camp workouts. Lawson’s signing is part of the Cowboys’ effort to fortify their defensive line ahead of the 2024 season.

Depth Chart and Odds of Making the Team

Lawson’s role is likely to be as a rotational pass rusher behind established stars Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence. His odds of making the team are reasonably good, considering:

  1. The Cowboys’ need for edge rush depth after Williams’ injury.
  2. Lawson’s previous success and experience in the NFL.
  3. His familiarity with Cowboys defensive run-game coordinator Paul Guenther, who was the Bengals’ defensive coordinator during Lawson’s breakout rookie season.

However, Lawson will need to stay healthy and perform well to secure his spot on the roster. The Cowboys’ recent defensive line additions, including the trade for Jordan Phillips, means Lawson will face stiff competition.
